Corruption has a corrosive impact on prosperity, growth, security and the fight against extreme poverty. The London Anti-Corruption Summit provides a unique opportunity for global leaders to do something concrete about it. We want leaders to prevent corruption, punish those that are corrupt and protect those that do something about it. Without real global cooperation and a will to change, the summit will be another talk shop, full of promises to consider recommendations, that are not followed through, and hence will have little impact. When President Buhari responded to David Cameron’s comment that Nigeria is one of the most corrupt countries in the World, he did not ask for an apology, in fact he agreed. President Buhari has asked for Britain to play its role in returning stolen assets now held in British banks. How will the British Prime Minister respond? We hope it is not with just with rhetoric around how ‘Nigeria has taken remarkable steps forward to counter corruption, and praising its leaders for ‘battling hard.’ As TI’s Chair, Jose Ugaz has stated ‘It takes two to tango.’ Transparency International wants time bound commitments to prevent corruption by making it harder to transfer, hide and benefit from the proceeds of corruption by championing full beneficial ownership transparency.
